چکیده

Optical emission lines provide an important new window on the HVCs. Recent studies of the Hα line reveal that ionized hydrogen is pervasively associated with the neutral hydrogen in HVCs. The Wis-consin Hα Mapper (WHAM) instrument has so far detected Hα from high-velocity clouds in the M, A, and C complexes. We find a close spatial correspondence between the neutral and ionized portions of the HVCs with some evidence that the ionized gas envelopes the neutral part of the clouds. The velocities of the Hα and 21-cm detections are well correlated, but the intensities are not. If the clouds are photoionized, the Hα intensity is a direct measure of the Lyman continuum flux in the Galactic halo. Forthcoming observations of the Hα line in combination with other emission lines will give new insights into the high-velocity cloud phenomena and will also probe the physical conditions of their environment.

Distance Constraints for High Velocity Clouds from Optical Emission Lines

We report results from a survey of high velocity clouds and the Magellanic Stream for faint, diffuse optical recombination emission lines. We detect Hα emission with surface brightness from 41 to 1680 mR from HVCs, and from < 40 to 1360 mR in the MS. A simple model for the photoionizing radiation emergent from the Galaxy, normalized to the HVCs A and M with known distances, predicts distances f...

Optical Emission from High Velocity Clouds and the Ionization Sources in the Galactic Halo

Optical emission lines have now been detected from about 20 high velocity clouds. These emission lines – primarily Hα, secondarily [N ii] and [S ii] – are very faint and diffuse, spread over the surfaces of the clouds. We compile emission line measurements and present a model in which the Hα is recombination caused by photoionizing radiation escaping the Milky Way. In such a model, we infer HVC...

High-velocity Clouds and the Local Group

I examine some of the evidence relevant to the idea that high-velocity clouds (HVCs) are gas clouds distributed throughout the Local Group, as proposed by Blitz et al. (1999) and Braun & Burton (1999). This model makes several predictions: a) the clouds have low metallicities; b) there should be no detectable Hα emission; c) analogues near other galaxies should exist; and d) many faint HVCs in ...

Reconstructing Deconstruction: High-velocity Cloud Distance through Disruption Morphology

We present Arecibo L-band Feed Array 21-cm observations of a sub-complex of HVCs at the tip of the Anti-Center Complex. These observations show morphological details that point to interaction with the ambient halo medium and differential drag within the cloud sub-complex. We develop a new technique for measuring cloud distances, which relies upon these observed morphological and kinematic chara...

Local Group HVCs: Status of the Evidence

The evidence for locating the High Velocity Clouds in the Local Group is summarized and evaluated. Recent measurements of the Hα surface brightness and metallicity of a number of HVCs appear to be fatal to the Galactic fountain as a significant contributor to the HVC phenomenon, but not to the existence of the fountain itself. Observations of extragalactic analogues to HVCs remain the sine qua ...
